Cruise Door Decorations: Tips & Questions
1. Your ship might not allow cruise door decorations
Most of your common cruise lines will allow you to decorate your stateroom door, however a couple do not.
Norwegian Cruise Line does not allow decorating of any kind. If you decide to try it while on a Norwegian cruise, you will most likely come back to everything on your door taken down.
Another popular line that doesn’t have a rule but still doesn’t like or encourage decorating is Virgin Voyages.
They don’t flat out say in their rules you can’t decorate but they do state they believe it makes the doors look ugly.
2. Think about what materials you want to use
If you’re going to decorate your cruise stateroom door you need to research and choose your materials wisely.
Cruise lines do not allow any type of flamable materials to be on your door.
Now I have personally seen some paper decorations on stateroom doors so I’m not sure how strict they are on this, but I would not take the chance if you don’t want them thrown away.
3. Most stateroom doors are metal
One great thing about cruise stateroom doors being metal is that you can decorate with magnets. There are tons of cute options that I’ll be linking below.
Common items you can use on your metal door would be magnetic tape, regular tape or cruise themed magnets.
4. Non metal stateroom doors
For non metal doors you’ll want to be careful what you use so you don’t damage the door.

5. Do not damage your door
Whatever you use to decorate your door, make sure you are not damaging it. You should leave it in the same condition you found it in.
Decorating your door can be super fun and festive but you don’t want to do anything that will get you a fine from the cruise line.
6. Why would I want to decorate my door?
First and foremost, it’s FUN!
It also makes it easier for you or anyone in your group to be able to find your room. Cruise ships are full of a sea of room doors and hallways that look the same.
Decorating your door can make it much easier to be able to remember where your room is and be able to find it faster.
Some people also like to interact with other cruise passengers. They’ll add a small whiteboard that they can ask question, play games or leave messages.
7. What occasions do people decorate for?
Some people will just add a few decorations and magnets that are cruised themed.
However, most of the doors you will pass will have a special occasion theme.
Common themes:
- Anniversaries
- Birthdays
- Girls Trips
- Bachelorette Trips
- Honeymoon Cruise
- Halloween
- Christmas
- New Years
- Family Cruise
- Group Cruise
8. Don’t use a pineapple to decorate your door unless you know what it means
If you’re going on a caribbean cruise, you might want to use some tropical decorations for your cruise door.
HOWEVER, there is a special meaning for a pinapple on a cruise. If you know that reason and want to advertise for that, by all means!
If you don’t want to advertise for that specific reason, I would suggest not using any type of pineapples on your door.
