Cruise motion sickness is the exact opposite of what you want to be dealing with on your vacation. Check out this post for the top tips and products to prevent and beat seasickness.
Motion sickness while on a cruise is extremely common. However, it’s not the most fun thing to deal with while trying to have the most fun on your cruise as possible.
As someone who has dealt with motion sickness my entire life, this was very important for me to do some trial and error of what works when going on a cruise.
Cruise motion sickness can be caused by generalized motion sickness, rough seas, the speed of the ship, etc.
If you’re looking for tips on how to prevent and stop seasickness on your cruise then you’ve come to the right place! In this post you’ll get access to the best products available to keep you feeling great on your vacation and also a few pro tips.
If you already know you are prone to motion sickness I would highly suggest bringing a few products from below that you know work for you.
On the other hand if you’ve never experienced motion sickness I would still suggest grabbing a couple products just in case because you never know if you haven’t been on a cruise before.
This post is all about cruise motion sickness.
Cruise Seasickness Products
Further down in this post there will be some tips to prevent and help motion sickness but first I will discuss what motion sickness products are currently topping the charts.
From motion sickness medication, to sea bands, seasickness patches and more. You should definitely consider a couple of these products for your next vacation.
Medications:
I do want to note that I would discuss with your doctor before taking any new medications. I am not responsible for anything that does happen, I am not an expert and would consult one to make sure any medication is a good fit for you.
Be sure to look if a product is all natural or has ingredients that may interact with each other. You don’t want to combine the wrong things.
Example: I personally on a cruise most use sea bands, the natural ear patches and regular dramamine because for me, they don’t interact or have bad side effects but everyone is different.
This medication is first in line because Bonnie is one that tops the charts when it comes to the cruise community. I have polled people on different pages and the most common answer for cruise motion sickness is to use Bonnie.
Dramamine is a classic motion sickness medication. I have personally used this all of my life. I don’t love that it makes you sleepy but it is still worth it when feeling extremely nauseous.
If you’re looking for a natural product, this form of dramamine will be for you. I will say I think that the regular form works a lot better but that is just my personal experience and everyone is different.
If you’re going on a cruise with your kids and you aren’t sure if they’re going to become seasick, this is the product for you!
Meclizine is another motion sickness medication that comes with high reviews.
Wearable Products:
Sea bands are a great product to use for motion sickness on a cruise. I personally love this exact brand but there are several out there. These work by targeting pressure points in your wrists.
If you’re wanting to buy sea bands but need a pair for the whole family I would go with this pack of 5!
Something a little more high tech in the world of motion sickness remedies would be this electronic motion sickness band.
There are five different output levels you can choose from and this product is rechargable.
This product is from the same company as the one above. However, this model is waterproof. If you’re someone who already know motion sickness is an issue for you, you might want to consider a bracelet like this.
This sea band is similar to the first few, it is not electronic. However, this band instead of being one size fits all, is adjustable.
Another popular motion sickness product are patches. This patch in particular is all natural so you can still combine it with other products.
This product lasts for several days so it is great for a cruise and they stay on very well. I haven’t had any issues with them falling off, even in water.

Additional Products:
If you’re looking for alternative products to those listed above or would just like to have a few different ones, check out this natural inhaler. You can also rub the solution on your skin.
Ginger is a great product to help aid in seasickness. I would recommend these ginger drops to put in your bag on a cruise.
Another natural product if keeping to more natural remedies is important to you. These are topical drops you can use to help with your seasickness.
This product is more so advertised for morning sickness for pregnancy but also works for motion sickness. They’re easy to grab and go to toss in a bag.
Ginger gum is another product that is easy to take on your cruise and keep with you if you start feeling sick and need something to help.
Cruise Motion Sickness Tips
Is there anything on the ship I can eat or drink to help my seasickness?
Yes! While I would definitely recommend using a few of the products above there are a couple items on the ship that will help.
Go to the buffet or a cafe if they’re available there too and grab a couple of green apples. Green apples contain pectin which can neutralize your stomach acid. The natural sugar that is in them also helps settle your stomach if you’re feeling sick.
Go to the bar and asked for a ginger ale. Ginger has been known to help with nausea. It’s also said that the carbonation contributes to aiding your stomach.
Room location
When booking a cruise you might just want to let the cruise line pick the location to save some money. However, if you’re prone to motion sickness you will probably want to pick your own room as the location of your room can greatly vary how you’ll feel.
If you’re wanting to help keep yourself from getting sick the best location for your room to be is mid ship.
Cruise ships seem to move through the ocean from front to back, not as much side to side. That being said, if you have a room at the very front or back of the ship you’re going to feel A LOT more movement than those with rooms mid ship.
Lower levels
Another tip that I personally disagree with but is widely shared so I do want to share it is also getting a room on a lower level. People say this also helps with motion sickness.
I however actually get more sick on the lower levels more than anywhere else and prefer to have a room about halfway up the ship to slightly above.
Balcony vs Interior
Another well known motion sickness tip is picking an interior room instead of one with a balcony. The interior rooms obviously are more central to the ship so they are supposed to be a little bit more steady than a balcony.
I don’t like this makes a HUGE difference as long as you are still in a mid ship room.
Get fresh air
If you do find yourself feeling sick and want a quick fix one easy thing you can do is leave wherever you are and get some fresh air.
You could go to your balcony, the top deck by the pool or even if you’re on a lower level and your cruise ship has areas along the side of the ship you can get some air at.
Besides the products above is there anything else I can take to help cruise motion sickness?
Yes!
The cruise line will have one type of motion sickness medication usually for free outside of the medical facility. I would still suggest bringing other options in case you can’t take the kind they have or if it doesn’t work for you.
If you already know you are prone to motion sickness you can always talk to your doctor before the cruise and they can prescribe you other medications.
Choose a larger ship
What ship you’re sailing on is a HUGE factor into how seasick you could become. I have sailed on large ships and small ships.
The smaller ships you will feel a lot more motion than you do on the larger ships, potentially causing you to become sick.
When you cruise on a large ship you barely feel the movement. It’s such a different experience as someone who has dealt with motion sickness their whole life.
Hopefully this post has helped you learn a little more about motion sickness on a cruise, what products are available to you, tips of how to prevent it and more.
